We know from 1 John 3:4 that "Sin is the transgression of the law." And that "by the law is the knowledge of sin." But sin is not defined by the greatness of the transgression. Sin reveals that the heart is divided. When we do not follow God's expressed will but choose instead to follow our own course we show that in that area of our life we are out of harmony with God. The soul is yet divided in its service.

We may receive pardon from any sin if we but ask. But sin that is cherished in the heart and not overcome will eventually overcome us. And sin separates us from God.

So when you think about sin, to define it, don't limit yourself to simply the law, the prophets, or the Ten Commandments. Our whole being belongs to God. He has purchased us with the blood of His beloved Son. Our only response to His love and mercy must be a full surrender of self. It must be complete and whole. Everything that pertains to heart, body, and soul, must be weighed in the balances of the cross. Whose side do we choose? We cannot live with a house divided in loyalty. We can only serve one master.

See 1 John 3:

quote:
"4Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. 5But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. 6No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.

"7Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. 8He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. 9No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. 10This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother."
