Yesterday’s gathering of the church in my house was interesting, instructive and encouraging. Usually when my 15-year old son and I break open our Bibles together, I have a specific word or thought in my heart to share. Yesterday was one of those occasional times where I was blank. Nothing. No specific direction at all.

Some years ago back in a larger church setting in Oregon, the Lord spoke to me these life-changing words,

“You’re not going to have a message every week. There are many members in my body and I plan to use all of them. That means sometimes you’ll have it...and other times you won’t. Be equally ready to receive as you are to give.”

That word was such a relief! I’ve noticed a clear difference between having something and not having something. When I don’t, it usually means someone else does. And God want’s to use them to encourage me.

Yesterday, I told my son I really had nothing specific at all to share and asked him if he did. He said that he felt from the Lord to be grateful and appreciative for what he had in his life.

Now, if you’re a parent you can imagine how terrific hearing that from your teenager is! Wow! Unsolicited gratitude from your kids. How terrific is that?! What an encouraging word for me! Once again, God using His church to edify itself - Thank you Jesus! Sometimes getting out of the way is the right way to go!

That is wonderful, Pat. It's easy for us to monopolize because of our long histories with Bible Study, Church, etc. Congrats on raising a son who is beginning to "hear from God for himself!"

Sometimes, we are critical of traditional churches for the way that the "clergy" stymie and smother the "laity." The same thing can happen in house churches, can it not? May God prevent it.

The wolf also shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; and a little child shall lead them. Isaiah 11:6

Well, the animal kingdom has not yet been reconciled but a child can still lead us now and then.
