For a book on the practical side of Watchman Nee's ministry we recommend "Further Talks on the Church Life". It has been a real help to us.

There have been so many choice saints of God through the years. Through so many of them the Lord was revealed in special ways. For example, when you hear the name Brother Lawrence, you immediately think of practicing the presence of God. Andrew Murray's name reminds us to have an inner life of maintained fellowship with the Lord. George Muller helps us realize that it's possible to live by faith. I could go on and on mentioning the saints of old. Though they are no longer with us, their writings are. I consider their works as a fellowship I get into as I read their words that are taught by the Holy Spirit. Of course my main reading is the Scriptures, but I also thoroughly enjoy reading the old books. Like Steph, I would rather eat a cheap meal and drive an old car if it means I will be able to buy a choice book (and on a one-income teacher's salary that's what it takes).

Reading also helps our daily lives and uplifts our gatherings. I know that I have much more to contribute when I've been immersed in the Word and profitable books. For one, they help keep my mind on things above. Further, I find that the Spirit likes to lead me into the realization of what I've been enjoying. Then when I'm with the saints I have much more substance to contribute as the Spirit leads.

For one to say , "I don't read other's writings, only the Bible," is like saying, "I only value what the Lord directly reveals to me, not what He reveals to others." Also, the funny thing is that some who say such are quick to write so others will read their writings.

Just a few random thoughts -- I hope no one is offended by them. For a time the Lord may have some of us only read the Bible, especially if we too heavily relied on other writings in the past. But eventually we will be balanced if we allow Him to adjust us.

Yours in Him,

I was not going to get into this thread, but Kyle's post has propelled me in :-).

I really agree with Kyle; I too enjoy FELLOWSHIP as I read. There was a time in my Christian walk when I read to gain knowledge and receive insight from others (used to call it "new" Light). Now I enjoy tasting the spirit of the writer and simply enjoying their portion of Christ!

It is also encouraging to taste the oneness of another saint who either has experienced or saw the same thing. Sometimes you first, other times their experience of Christ opens a new door for you.

If that writer were alive and you were personally associated with them, and the Lord impressed you to assist them in "provision," would we not do so gladly? Most of the writers I fellowship with are no longer here physically. So I have no opportunity to assist them personally. My conscience is pure at this point to purchase books (a small price for the reward in return) in order to have that fellowship. It has truly enriched my life many times over and like Kyle has said, adds a greater dimension for sharing with others, whether in our gatherings or one on one. I realize this is how the Lord has given me liberty and I do not expect (used to, not anymore) everyone to follow the same walk that I have. Our gifting and call to the Body are different - to His glory!

There is a balance to this: On several occasions, the Lord has called me away to "fast" from spiritual books for a time, just to draw closer to Him.

So He may require "our Isaac" as a test of our heart. We must not cling too tightly to anything on this earth. If we desire Christ to have preeminence in our gatherings, He should first have that place in our hearts.
