The word 'gospel' has been somewhat watered down. From referring to the life and teaching of Jesus, it has come to mean 'the absolute bare minimum you have to do to get into heaven by the skin of your teeth.'

When Paul evangelized, he didn't just give a rushed altar call. He taught the gospel. "Evangelism" is from the Greek word for gospel. If we understand the gospel is much wider in meaning than the way it is used in evangelicalism, we can gain a better understanding of the great commission, and what an evangelist and evangelism are. Christ told the apostles to go preach the gospel. They were to teach all nations to observe what Christ had commanded them.

The first four book of the New Testament are called 'gospels.' They contain the story of Jesus Christ, and many of His teachings. They contain parables. Christ Himself preached the gospel of the kingdom, and Acts tells us that Paul also preached the kingdom of God. God wants disciples of Christ, not merely bare basic essentials.

The next time someone says 'if it doesn't effect your salvation, its not that important' think about these things.

Yes, there is so much more to "being saved" than that walk down the altar years ago. There is more than believing. Even the demons believe; but sure aren't going to get in the kingdom. Jesus said if we love him, we will follow him, hear him, and do his commandments. Be overcommers with the testamony of Jesus and doers of his commands! Die to self and let Jesus live!

Just as a side: "the gospel" IS "the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus Christ" which we OBEY, when and ONLY when we #1 Repent (death), are baptised in the NAME of JESUS CHRIST FOR the remission of sins (burial) and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost - with the only true biblical evidence of speaking in other tongues as the spirit gives the utterance (resurrection) NOT to be confused with the GIFT of TONGUES. EVERY believer has a tongue/prayer language, but not every believer has the GIFT of TONGUES for Church edification. John 3:3-5; Acts 2:38

according to 1 Cor.15:1-5 the gospel is that Christ died for our sins and was buried, rose again the third day and was seen of men. That is the gospel. This is what God did in Christ to reconcile the world to himself. 2Cor.5:20 We enter into the provision of pardon of past sins when we obey the gospel. God has commanded all men everywhere to repent and believe the gospel. The Gospel of the grace of God and the gospel of the kingdom of God are the same thing!!! Act 20:24,25 Jesus preached The time is fufilled the kingdom of God is at hand repent and believe the gospel.Mark 1:15

If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus , and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. Romans 10:9,10

Entering into this provision is by grace through faith, it is God's gift of llfe in His Son Christ Jesus. We are baptized by the Spirit into the body of Christ and made a new creature through the regenerative work of the Holy Spirit. 1Cor. 12:13 Titus 3:5

The christain testimony of true salvation is three fold. 1) the love of God shed abroad in the heart Rom5:5 2) The inner witness of the Holy Spirit in our spirit Rom. 8:16 3) The conscious realization of being cleansed by the blood of Christ Heb.9:14

We then must continue to look to the Lord as our daily supply and source of spiritual and material needs and with a look of faith which works by love walk in the provisions that he has made available for our every need. Heb.12:1-3

The gospel is the good news of the death, buriel and resurrection of Jesus Christ on our behalf.
It is the good news that Christ has taken away all our sins through his death on the cross and provided everlasting life through His resurrection. And anyone who believes that Christ has saved them receive complete forgiveness and the gift of eternal life.

"And you were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of you salvation. Having believed, you were marked in Him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession-to the praise of his glory" (Eph 1:13-14)

When a person see that he is a lost sinner who cannot save himself, but then repents-(changes his mind)-from unbelief to belief that he is saved through Jesus Christ alone, then that person receives the gift of forgiveness and everlasting life with Christ. (Eph 2:1-10, Rom 3:9-26, Rom 5:6-11, Tit 3:3-7, 1 John 5:9-13)

I would think that ultimately the "good news" must include "Christ in us." It is good news that Christ died to atone for our sins. It is good news that he rose again. But without hope of eternal life it all seems to be for naught.

Perhaps we think that eternal life is a mere quality of life that can be given to us like a possession that cannot be taken away. But God only has life inherent. We do not. Jesus Christ is Life. Eternal life would then be having Jesus Christ eternally dwelling in us.

We talk about being saved. And we put dates to our salvation. We might say, "I was saved June of 1993!" Salvation suggests being saved from something. We were saved from sin. Sin brings death. So we were saved from death. Life is the opposite of death. Jesus is the opposite of sin. Therefore, if we are saved then there is no more death in us.
quote:
1 John 3:9 Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
To be continued...

What is the gospel? Yes, it is the good news that Christ died for our sins. It looks like you all have a good idea of what the gospel is and that there is just one gospel . Not only did he die for and make the way for us to enter the kingdom, he actually set up the kingdom that we enter into as the new man, born again of spirit.

Mark 1:15 (KJV)
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Today, however, many are teaching there is more than one gospel, more than one kingdom and leading many astray.

In talking with a friend, I discovered that many think the kingdom of God and kingdom of heaven are different. They also think the gospel of Christ, gospel of God, gospel of the kingdom, gospel of grace, and gospel of peace are all different gospels. The more I learned about this teaching, commonly called dispensationalism, the more convinced I became that it was really a false gospel. It seems that the teachers of this error believe that Christ dying on the cross was only plan B. They believe that had the Jews accepted him, he would not have had to die. They teach there one gospel and kingdom for us Gentiles and another gospel and kingdom for the Jews. This goes against the scriptures of the OT which foretold the Messiah from birth to his rejection and death.

You might ask why I mention this in a heading “What is the gospel?” I believe that we should know about this prevalent false teaching and how to answer it from the scriptures. My friend who was more or less brainwashed in this teaching had never questioned it nor seen the scriptures explaining that there is one gospel and one kingdom for all. I would like to share the first of my studies about the gospel in the hopes that it may help you in your witness to others who may be prey to this teaching and challenge you to dig deeper into the gospel message.

Which gospel is the true gospel? Is there only one gospel? Or are there two distinct gospels for two different peoples as many teach? What about all the different phrases used in the NT such as the gospel of God and the gospel of Christ, gospel of the kingdom, gospel of peace, gospel of grace are they the same gospel or different? We do know that some will preach another gospel and some will pervert the gospel. Is this teaching of two or more gospels false?

Galatians 1:6-8 (KJV)
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: [7] Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. [8] But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.

The gospel must be published among the nations before the return of Christ. But what is the gospel or which is it?

GOSPEL PUBLISHED IN ALL WORLD
Mark 13:10 (KJV)
And the gospel must first be published among all nations.

GOSPEL GOES TO ALL WORLD
Col. 1:23 (KJV)
If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister;

GOSPEL OF KINGDOM PREACHED TO ALL WORLD
Matthew 24:14 (KJV)
And this gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in all the world for a witness unto all nations; and then shall the end come.

GOSPEL OF PEACE TO ENDS OF WORLD
Romans 10:15-18 (KJV)
And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! [16] But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? [17] So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. [18] But I say, Have they not heard? Yes verily, their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world.

**Notice that the gospel goes “to every creature” and is” published among the nations”, the gospel of the kingdom “shall be preached in all the world…”and the gospel of peace goes to “the ends of the world. Thus, the gospel of the kingdom and the gospel of peace are the same as the gospel and are preached to the world. All three are the same gospel and are for everybody.

JESUS PREACHES
Matthew 4:23 (KJV)
And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people.

**Jesus preached the gospel of the kingdom to the Jews; but as previously shown it is to be preached to the world too. One gospel was to go out to both the Jews and the Gentiles.

Mark 1:14-15 (KJV)
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God, [15] And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

*** Jesus preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God says, ” the time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand” This refers to the time for told by the prophecies. It is time for the Messiah to come and set up the kingdom.

PREACHED TO THE JEWS AND GENTILES
Acts 15:7-9 (KJV)
And when there had been much disputing, Peter rose up, and said unto them, Men and brethren, ye know how that a good while ago God made choice among us, that the Gentiles by my mouth should hear the word of the gospel, and believe. [8] And God, which knoweth the hearts, bare them witness, giving them the Holy Ghost, even as he did unto us; [9] And put no difference between us and them, purifying their hearts by faith.

Galatians 3:7-8 (KJV)
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. [8] And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Romans 1:16 (KJV)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

***Here is Acts we see that the Gentiles are to hear the gospel and believe and that God gives them the Holy Ghost the same as he does his Jewish followers He “put no difference between us and them,” Remember in God’s kingdom there is neither Jew or Greek. We are one in Christ. ( Galatians 3:28 (KJV)

**In Galatians 3:7-8 we see that those of the faith are the children of Abraham thus the prophesy that all nations would be blessed through him. Notice that Abraham also received the gospel even in the OT. The gospel is the plan that has been in existence always.

** Romans 1:16 shows us “the gospel of Christ” is the same gospel that goes” to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.”

**Previously, we saw the kingdom of God being preached to the Jews by Christ and to the world by his disciples. Thus, the gospel of the kingdom, is the same as the gospel of Christ and also the same as gospel of peace (shown above) These are all the same gospel that is to be preached to all the world, both Jew and Gentile.

GOSPEL OF SALVATION IS GOSPEL
Ephes. 1:11-14 (KJV)
In whom also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestinated according to the purpose of him who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will: [12] That we should be to the praise of his glory, who first trusted in Christ. [13] In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise, [14] Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.

***Here we see the word of truth is the “gospel of your salvation” and they were “sealed with “the holy Spirit.

**We previously looked at Acts 15: 7-9 which showed that the Gentiles also received the Holy Ghost and that God “put no difference between us and them”. Thus, the “gospel of your salvation” is also the same as the gospel, the gospel of the kingdom , the gospel of Christ, and the gospel of peace. One gospel for two peoples: the Jews and the Gentiles.

GOSPEL OF GRACE IS KINGDOM GOSPEL
Acts 20:24-25 (KJV)
But none of these things move me, neither count I my life dear unto myself, so that I might finish my course with joy, and the ministry, which I have received of the Lord Jesus, to testify the gospel of the grace of God. [25] And now, behold, I know that ye all, among whom I have gone preaching the kingdom of God, shall see my face no more.

***We can see the speaker is testifying the gospel of grace and preaching the kingdom all in the same passage. How is it we enter into the kingdom? It is by the grace of God. Thus, the gospel of grace is another name for the gospel of the kingdom.

GOSPEL OF GOD IS GOSPEL OF CHRIST
Romans 15:16-20 (KJV)
That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost. [17] I have therefore whereof I may glory through Jesus Christ in those things which pertain to God. [18] For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, [19] Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God; so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the gospel of Christ. [20] Yea, so have I strived to preach the gospel, not where Christ was named, lest I should build upon another man's foundation:

**In this passage the gospel is referred to as the gospel of God (verse 16) and as the gospel of Christ (verse 19) and we see mention of the Holy Spirit given to them as mentioned in previous passages.

2 Cor. 10:14-16 (KJV)
For we stretch not ourselves beyond our measure, as though we reached not unto you: for we are come as far as to you also in preaching the gospel of Christ: [15] Not boasting of things without our measure, that is, of other men's labours; but having hope, when your faith is increased, that we shall be enlarged by you according to our rule abundantly, [16] To preach the gospel in the regions beyond you, and not to boast in another man's line of things made ready to our hand.

2 Cor. 11:7 (KJV)
Have I committed an offence in abasing myself that ye might be exalted, because I have preached to you the gospel of God freely?

**In the passage we see the gospel of Christ, the gospel and then continuing in chapter 11 we see it is called the gospel of God. Thus, the gospel of God is the same as the gospel of Christ which is the same as all the above mentioned gospels.

GOSPEL OF KINGDOM IS GOSPEL OF JESUS CHRIST
Mark 1:1-3 (KJV)
The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God; [2] As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee. [3] The voice of one crying in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Mark 1:14 (KJV)
Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

**Passage starts with gospel of Jesus Christ and switches to gospel of kingdom of God.

**Interestingly in the four gospels, Matthew uses both gospel and gospel of the kingdom. Mark uses gospel, gospel of the kingdom and gospel of Christ. Luke uses gospel and John doesn’t mention the word gospel at all.

Gospel: 2097 g euaggelizo from 2095 and 32 to announce good news (evangelize) espec. The gospel:-declare, bring (declare, show) glad (good) tidings, preach (the gospel)

Gospel: 2098 g euaggelion from the same as 2097; a good message, i. e. the gospel:- gospel.

Gospel 4283 g proeuaggelizomal; from 4253 and 2097; to announce glad news in advance:-preach before the gospel.

The word gospel, we can see is the good news of Christ’s sacrifice for us and his resurrection that makes it possible for us to enter the kingdom that is being spoken of. This good news comes from God and Christ about how we can obtain salvation and grace and enter into his eternal kingdom through belief in Christ and his new covenant.

4283 was used only once in the NT in Gal. 3:8 and was referring to the gospel preached to Abraham before Christ came.

Galatians 3:8 (KJV)
And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed.

Simply put, the gospel of the kingdom, of Jesus Christ, of God, of peace, of the grace of God, of salvation, are all one gospel. Plain and simple, the good news is that the kingdom (of God and of Heaven) is at hand now! Today is the day of salvation. Repent and believe that Jesus died for our sins, was raised from the dead after 3 days and 3 nights that we may enter the kingdom and receive the gift of eternal life. There is one way and Jesus is the door, the way, the truth. Remember Jesus has many names; the Son, a lamb, a king, etc. but he is still Jesus. Just so the gospel is the one way of salvation through belief in Jesus and there is one kingdom forever regardless of various names and descriptions.

2 Cor. 11:4 (KJV)
For if he that cometh preacheth another Jesus, whom we have not preached, or if ye receive another spirit, which ye have not received, or another gospel, which ye have not accepted, ye might well bear with him.

Matthew 24:3-5 (KJV)
And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world? [4] And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man deceive you. [5] For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

Those who teach multiple gospels and kingdoms are teaching another gospel for there is only one gospel. Therefore, let us be diligent in our studies, proving what is the truth of God and sharing it with the world.

Hi Faith,
My understanding of the meaning of the gospel lies in a question on Mark 1:1-3
Why is Isaiah 52 quoted there?
Why would He leave Zion?
Why would Jerusalem be wasted?
Was is not for their sin?
Was it not for the punishment God proclaimed in Isaiah 6?
Thus my understanding is - the good news that God is returning to Zion & He remembers no more the sin of His people.
The sign? The 1st coming of Jesus Christ - Isaiah 52:13 to 53:12.
What are we to do? Isaiah 52:11 & echoed in 2 Cor 6:17. i.e. Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you.
Is it too far fetched?

Hi Chubbena,

Please explain what part of Isa. 52 is quoted in Mark 1: 1-3. I did not see what you are referring to. I did find reference to Mark 1 speaking of John the Baptist in
Matthew 3:3 (KJV) Mark 1:3 (KJV) Luke 3:4 (KJV) John 1:23 (KJV) and Isa. 40:3

Isaiah 40:3 (KJV)
The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.

Yes, God left physical Zion for their sins, especially idolatry. They turned from God and his ways all through out the OT. Jerusalem was destroyed as predicted in Dan. 9, after they rejected Christ. It was called the days of vengeance. Luke 20-22.

You said, “Thus my understanding is - the good news that God is returning to Zion & He remembers no more the sin of His people.”

So what do you mean by God returning to Zion? What do you see as Zion? Do you see a physical people? On a physical earth? Do you see the gospel as specifically for the Israelites? Do you see them as special over the Gentiles? Do you see God returning to them without their belief? Or do you see that the savior of the world has come for all whosoever shall believe?

As I understand the gospel, there is neither Jew nor Greek but all may become the special people of God by belief in Christ, the one way to salvation.

Galatians 3:28 (KJV)
There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither bond nor free, there is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.

Romans 9:6-8 (KJV)
Not as though the word of God hath taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel: [7] Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children: but, In Isaac shall thy seed be called. [8] That is, They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: but the children of the promise are counted for the seed.

I do believe we are to come out of the world and be separate and yet we also are to live in the world and be lights. John 17:11-16 (KJV)

Hi Faith,
Sorry, I was referring to Isa 52:7 which is about the good news.
I was referring to Isa 52:8 when I said He's returning to Zion.
Here's what I think:
Zion is where He dwells with His people - where the tabernacle and the temple are the types.
His people is just that, His people, whoever call on His name.
Sorry again, I've got to run. Will share again tomorrow.
Can't help but leave you with Rev 18:4 - my favorite.

Hi Chubbena,

Thanks for clearing that up. Sorry to take so long to answer. Had forgotten which thread.

Where is Zion today? Since we are his temple, are we Zion?
I agree "whoever call on his name" is his people.
Rev. 18:4 is also one of my favorites.

*Previously, I’ve shown there is one gospel. Since there is only one, then it must be for both the saints of the OT and NT. Notice in Galatians 3 it was preached unto Abraham. In Hebrews 4:2 we see the gospel was preached to us (disciples and church) and unto them (Israel).

Galatians 3:7-9 (KJV)
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. [8] And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. [9] So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Hebrews 4:2 (KJV)
For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them: but the word preached did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in them that heard it.

*The gospel is the good news of the Savior promised by God as good news for all people.

Luke 2:10-11 (KJV)
And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. [11] For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Luke 2:27-32 (KJV)
And he came by the Spirit into the temple: and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him after the custom of the law, [28] Then took he him up in his arms, and blessed God, and said, [29] Lord, now lettest thou thy servant depart in peace, according to thy word: [30] For mine eyes have seen thy salvation, [31] Which thou hast prepared before the face of all people; [32] A light to lighten the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.

*The savior was foretold in the OT in many prophesies. He was to rule forever and his kingdom would have no end. Here are just a few passages fortelling the coming savior in the OT and their fulfillment by his first advent in the NT.

FROM LINE OF DAVID
Isaiah 9:6-7 (KJV)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. [7] Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Luke 2:1-7 (KJV)
And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. [2] (And this taxing was first made when Cyrenius was governor of Syria.) [3] And all went to be taxed, every one into his own city. [4] And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth, into Judaea, unto the city of David, which is called Bethlehem; (because he was of the house and lineage of David:) [5] To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child. [6] And so it was, that, while they were there, the days were accomplished that she should be delivered. [7] And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn.

BORN OF A VIRGIN
Isaiah 7:14 (KJV)
Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

FULFILLED
Matthew 1:18 (KJV)
Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost.

Matthew 28:1-10 (KJV)
In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre. [2] And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it. [3] His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow: [4] And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men. [5] And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified. [6] He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. [7] And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you. [8] And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.
[9] And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him. [10] Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Luke 24:50-51 (KJV)
And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them. [51] And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

*Christ came to set up the kingdom of God just as prophesied. He was right on time and fulfilled every detail of how he would come, preach, be rejected, die and rise.

*This has always been the plan for salvation.

John 3:16 (KJV)
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

*Those in the OT times were to look forward to the coming Savior. They were to believe God would do what he promised by faith.

Hebrews 11:4-5 (KJV)
By faith Abel offered unto God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, by which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts: and by it he being dead yet speaketh. [5] By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

*Even as early as Able we see God’s plan of salvation. The blood sacrifice foreshadowed Christ’s blood.

Hebrews 11:7-9 (KJV)
By faith Noah, being warned of God of things not seen as yet, moved with fear, prepared an ark to the saving of his house; by the which he condemned the world, and became heir of the righteousness which is by faith. [8] By faith Abraham, when he was called to go out into a place which he should after receive for an inheritance, obeyed; and he went out, not knowing whither he went. [9] By faith he sojourned in the land of promise, as in a strange country, dwelling in tabernacles with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise:

*The ark foreshadowed Christ as our deliverer.

Hebrews 11:13 (KJV)
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off, and were persuaded of them, and embraced them, and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

Hebrews 11:17 (KJV)
By faith Abraham, when he was tried, offered up Isaac: and he that had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

*Isaac foreshadowed Christ the only begotten son of God.

Hebrews 11:20-24 (KJV)
By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come. [21] By faith Jacob, when he was a dying, blessed both the sons of Joseph; and worshipped, leaning upon the top of his staff. [22] By faith Joseph, when he died, made mention of the departing of the children of Israel; and gave commandment concerning his bones. [23] By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's commandment. [24] By faith Moses, when he was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter;

Hebrews 11:27 (KJV)
By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king: for he endured, as seeing him who is invisible.

Hebrews 11:29-31 (KJV)
By faith they passed through the Red sea as by dry land: which the Egyptians assaying to do were drowned. [30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down, after they were compassed about seven days. [31] By faith the harlot Rahab perished not with them that believed not, when she had received the spies with peace. 32 And what shall I more say? for the time would fail me to tell of Gedeon, and of Barak, and of Samson, and of Jephthae; of David also, and Samuel, and of the prophets: 11:33 Who through faith subdued kingdoms, wrought righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

*They had faith; they believed God’s promises to them to bless them through the seed of Abraham. Christ is that seed. They knew he would come for God promised.
They heard the gospel and believed.

*We know some of the OT saints did believe and walk with God and were considered his remnant.

James 2:23 (KJV)
And the scripture was fulfilled which saith, Abraham believed God, and it was imputed unto him for righteousness: and he was called the Friend of God.

Genesis 5:22 (KJV)
And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

Genesis 5:24 (KJV)
And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

Genesis 6:9 (KJV)
These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

1 Kings 19:18 (KJV)
Yet I have left me seven thousand in Israel, all the knees which have not bowed unto Baal, and every mouth which hath not kissed him.

Romans 11:4 (KJV)
But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.

*Many don’t realize it but some in the OT did have the holy spirit of God, the same spirit that teaches and comforts us.

Psalm 51:10-12 (KJV)
Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me. [11] Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me. [12] Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.

Isaiah 63:10-11 (KJV)
But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them. [11] Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

Genesis 41:38 (KJV)
And Pharaoh said unto his servants, Can we find such a one as this is, a man in whom the Spirit of God is?

Exodus 31:3 (KJV)
And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship,

Exodus 35:31 (KJV)
And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;

*Many teach that there is some other way to get into the kingdom of God besides Christ. They lie.

John 14:4-6 (KJV)
And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know. [5] Thomas saith unto him, Lord, we know not whither thou goest; and how can we know the way? [6] Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

*Even though Christ hadn’t come to the earth in human form yet, Abraham and the other OT saints believed he would come as God had promised and thus they were counted faithful.

*During Christ time on earth, some saw him in person and believed. They are among the faithful. Those of us alive today look back to the written witness of Christ’s life and believe he did come as our savior and did rise as prophesied and lives on the right hand of God today. Thus for our belief we are counted among the faithful. Some looked forward to, some actually saw first hand, and others look back to the historical account; but we all believed and were faithful to the one Savior, Jesus Christ. We are all saints and will all be changed at the second advent of Christ to be with him forever in the kingdom of God.

*Some teach that since Christ was rejected by the Jews, for not setting up an earthly kingdom and overthrowing the Roman government, that he must do that in the future and then the Jews will accept him. However, that is a lie. There was never a plan for an earthly kingdom.

*Scripture foretold the rejection of the Jews and his death and resurrection. That was part of the plan all along. The many prophesies telling us the many details surrounding his birth and death witness to us that he was who he said, for every one of them came to pass as predicted, even the rejection by his own people.

*It was plainly predicted that he would set up a kingdom that would never end.

Isaiah 9:7 (KJV)
Of the increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it, and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will perform this.

Luke 1:31-33 (KJV)
And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name Jesus. [32] He shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: [33] And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end.

*How could an earthly kingdom have no end?
Simply, it could not. Christ made it clear his kingdom was not an earthly kingdom; but was spiritual in nature. That is why the Jews could not see it for it was and is in the heart of the faithful.

John 18:36 (KJV)
Jesus answered, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom were of this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Luke 17:20-21 (KJV)
And when he was demanded of the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God should come, he answered them and said, The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: [21] Neither shall they say, Lo here! or, lo there! for, behold, the kingdom of God is within you.

*Many give the masses false hope for another time of salvation. Various beliefs have various times of so many years of tribulation in which to be saved. Some preach that many, especially the Jews, will be saved during a 1,000 year time on the earth. They deny what the scriptures state.

Mark 1:15 (KJV)
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

*The time is fulfilled! The kingdom of God is at hand now! Repent and believe the gospel now!

2 Cor. 6:2 (KJV)
(For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation.)

Acts 17:30 (KJV)
And the times of this ignorance God winked at; but now commandeth all men every where to repent:

*God no longer winks at ignorance but now commands all men every where to repent. Now is the day of salvation! Not tomorrow. Not some future kingdom. NOW!

*Our Lord is very clear that he is the way. Those who try to enter by some other way on some other day are the same as thieves and robbers.

John 10:1-2 (KJV)
Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber. [2] But he that entereth in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep.

John 10:7 (KJV)
Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.

John 10:9 (KJV)
I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.

*We know that those who preach another gospel are accursed. Also those who teach false doctrines lead many to hell.

Galatians 1:6-9 (KJV)
I marvel that ye are so soon removed from him that called you into the grace of Christ unto another gospel: [7] Which is not another; but there be some that trouble you, and would pervert the gospel of Christ. [8] But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed. [9] As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.

Matthew 23:13-15 (KJV)
But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in. [14] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. [15] Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Matthew 15:14 (KJV)
Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.

Luke 6:39 (KJV)
And he spake a parable unto them, Can the blind lead the blind? shall they not both fall into the ditch?

2 Thes. 1:8-9 (KJV)
In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: [9] Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power;

*Therefore, let us keep our eyes on the one Lord, let us believe his one gospel, look for things above, that we may enter that one kingdom for eternity.

Mark 1:15 (KJV)
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

1 Thes. 5:21 (KJV)
Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.

Hi Chubbena,

You seem to be the only one interested in this study. So here goes the last in this study on the gospel. I enjoyed the study and found many new things I had overlooked before. I hope you enjoy it too.

I’ve been searching scriptures for more passages showing there is only one gospel in both the NT and OT and that is Jesus and him crucified.

Jesus was the son in the OT.

Psalm 2:7-12 (KJV)
I will declare the decree: the Lord hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten thee. [8] Ask of me, and I shall give thee the heathen for thine inheritance, and the uttermost parts of the earth for thy possession. [9] Thou shalt break them with a rod of iron; thou shalt dash them in pieces like a potter's vessel. [10 Be wise now therefore, O ye kings: be instructed, ye judges of the earth. [11] Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice with trembling. [12] Kiss the Son, lest he be angry, and ye perish from the way, when his wrath is kindled but a little. Blessed are all they that put their trust in him.

Proverbs 30:4 (KJV)
Who hath ascended up into heaven, or descended? who hath gathered the wind in his fists? who hath bound the waters in a garment? who hath established all the ends of the earth? what is his name, and what is his son's name,if thou canst tell?

Isaiah 9:6 (KJV)
For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.

Zech. 12:10 (KJV)
And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.

Christ, the son of God, was “made of the seed of David according to the flesh.” Rom. 3:1 He was already the son of God; but he was made flesh.

Jeremiah 23:5 (KJV)
Behold, the days come, saith the Lord, that I will raise unto David a righteous Branch, and a King shall reign and prosper, and shall execute judgment and justice in the earth.

Matthew 21:9 (KJV)
And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

Matthew 22:42 (KJV)
Saying, What think ye of Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, The Son of David.

John 1:14 (KJV)
And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

Philip. 2:8 (KJV)
And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.

1 Tim. 3:16 (KJV)
And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

We are told to test the spirits and the test is do they believe that the son of God came in the flesh.

1 John 4:2-3 (KJV)
Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: [3] And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.

2 John 1:7 (KJV)
For many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist.

Rom. 1:4 states Jesus was “declared to be the Son of God with power,…” He was already the Son before he was born in human flesh; but was declared to be the Son while in the flesh.

Paul preached the gospel to all men regardless of race and was not ashamed to do so. He boldly proclaims that salvation is for everyone, the Jew first then the rest. He doesn’t teach different ways for different people.

Romans 1:16 (KJV)
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek.

Paul states that the just shall live by faith.

Romans 1:17 (KJV)
For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.

We can see in Galatians and Hebrews that those of us which are faithful are also the children of Abraham. We can see that the scriptures foresaw the salvation of the heathen and preached the gospel to Abraham. We can see that the OT saints also lived by faith looking forward to the promise of the gospel.

Galatians 3:7-14 (KJV)
Know ye therefore that they which are of faith, the same are the children of Abraham. [8] And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the heathen through faith, preached before the gospel unto Abraham, saying, In thee shall all nations be blessed. [9] So then they which be of faith are blessed with faithful Abraham. [10 For as many as are of the works of the law are under the curse: for it is written, Cursed is every one that continueth not in all things which are written in the book of the law to do them. [11] But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, The just shall live by faith. [12] And the law is not of faith: but, The man that doeth them shall live in them. [13] Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us: for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree: [14] That the blessing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles through Jesus Christ; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith.

Hebrews 10:36-11:3 (KJV)
For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. [37] For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. [38] Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him. [39] But we are not of them who draw back unto perdition; but of them that believe to the saving of the soul.
[11:1] Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. [2] For by it the elders obtained a good report. [3] Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.

The OT saint who was considered just lived by faith. Just as we live by faith.

Habakkuk 2:4 (KJV)
Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.

We can see in Rom. 3 that faith and belief in Jesus Christ is what saves a man regardless of his physical status of circumcision or uncircumcision. In other words it doesn’t matter if he is Jewish or not, belief in Jesus saves. It was Abraham’s belief in God that was counted unto him for righteousness. The Jews who did not believe are not counted as God’s elect.

Romans 3:21-4:3 (KJV)
But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets; [22] Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference: [23] For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; [24] Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: [25] Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God; [26] To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus. [27] Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay: but by the law of faith. [28] Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law. [29] Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also: [30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith. [31] Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.
[4:1] What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found? [2] For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God. [3] For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

What does it take for a man to believe God? Does it not take a broken and contrite heart and spirit for a man to repent of his unbelief? Those of the OT who were God’s remanant had a broken and contrite heart of repentance.

Psalm 34:18 (KJV)
The Lord is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.

Psalm 51:17 (KJV)
The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit: a broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

Isaiah 66:2 (KJV)
For all those things hath mine hand made, and all those things have been, saith the Lord: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

He tells all to believe God, first the Jews, then the Gentiles. They must all believe just as Abraham and the OT prophets and saints did believe. Nothing is ever said of providing another means of salvation to anyone in another future age. All must believe God and his promise of Jesus Christ the Messiah who died for us and was raised. That is the only way to enter the kingdom of God.

Mark 1:15 (KJV)
And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

Acts 26:20 (KJV)
But shewed first unto them of Damascus, and at Jerusalem, and throughout all the coasts of Judaea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works meet for repentance.

Men have no excuse. Christ is” the true Light that lighteth every man that cometh into the world”

John 1:6-14 (KJV)
There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. [7] The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. [8] He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. [9] That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. [10 He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. [11] He came unto his own, and his own received him not. [12] But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: [13] Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God. [14] And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,) full of grace and truth.

** Men are drawn away from God of their own lusts. All men do know God for God shewed them. Creation is clearly seen and understood. They knew God but did not glorify him but changed the glory of the uncoruptible God into an image. They changed it, thus they understood the glory.

James 1:13-15 (KJV)
Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God: for God cannot be tempted with evil, neither tempteth he any man: [14] But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed. [15] Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death.

Romans 1:18-23 (KJV)
For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who hold the truth in unrighteousness; [19] Because that which may be known of God is manifest in them; for God hath shewed it unto them. [20 For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they are without excuse: [21] Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened. [22] Professing themselves to be wise, they became fools, [23] And changed the glory of the uncorruptible God into an image made like to corruptible man, and to birds, and fourfooted beasts, and creeping things.

Romans 1:25 (KJV)
Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. Amen.

Thus, God gave them over to uncleanness. They were not reprobates to begin with but because they rejected God, he gave them up to their lusts and wicked ways.

.Romans 1:24 (KJV)
Wherefore God also gave them up to uncleanness through the lusts of their own hearts, to dishonour their own bodies between themselves:

Romans 1:26 (KJV)
For this cause God gave them up unto vile affections: for even their women did change the natural use into that which is against nature:

Romans 1:28 (KJV)
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient;

In Romans 2 Paul deals with the Jews showing they are not righteous. He explains that the fact they are natural circumcised Jews means little if they break the law and that the uncircumcised are counted circumcised if they keep the law. He expounds that not all Jews are Jews but those who are circumcised of the heart are the true Jews.

Romans 2:25-26 (KJV)
For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law: but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. [26] Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righteousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?

Romans 2:28-29 (KJV)
For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh: [29] But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.

God set forth Christ to be the atonement or propitiation for the sins of the OT saints (remission of sins that are past).

Romans 3:25 (KJV)
Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

Thus, the gospel of Christ was for them too. Although the OT saint participated in the animal sacrifices it was Christ’s blood that actually took away their sins.

Hebrews 10:4 (KJV)
For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

They offered the sacrifices each year as a good faith sacrifice, knowing that those sacrifices could never atone for their sin. They remembered each year that the blood of bulls couldn’t take away sin and it was counted as paid, for it would be paid by Christ to whom they looked forward to coming as their Messiah.

Hebrews 10:1-4 (KJV)
For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually make the comers thereunto perfect. [2] For then would they not have ceased to be offered? because that the worshippers once purged should have had no more conscience of sins. [3] But in those sacrifices there is a remembrance again made of sins every year. [4] For it is not possible that the blood of bulls and of goats should take away sins.

Those who thought they were forgiven for their sacrifices were wrong. No matter how they tried to keep the law and make the sacrifices, they couldn’t wash away their sins. They were guilty of trying to work their way into the kingdom. They did not have faith in Christ as the perfect sacrifice and only way into the kingdom.

God knew all along that he would offer the gospel to the Gentiles as well as the Israelites even in the OT. There was never more than one plan of salvation for all regardless of nationality.

Hosea 2:23 (KJV)
And I will sow her unto me in the earth; and I will have mercy upon her that had not obtained mercy; and I will say to them which were not my people, Thou art my people; and they shall say, Thou art my God.

Abraham is a prime example of an OT saint who was justified by faith. He believed what God said and it was counted to him for righteousness. It was not the laws that he obeyed that were counted for righteousness; but that he believed God’s promise to him. Interestingly, Abraham believed God when God told him he would have a child; but later he doubted God, thus trying to intervene with Hagar. Even though, Abraham had doubts, God still counted his belief. This was an example of God’s grace on a believing but doubting human. Abraham, just like us, was not perfect; but counted righteous by God’s grace.

Romans 4:3 (KJV)
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

Naturally there is only one type of person, ungodly, sinful & unrighteous. The whole point of Romans is to make it clear that the Jew is no better than the Gentile. All men have sinned and come short when it comes to God’s righteousness. Jesus did not come to save the righteous; but the sinners.

Matthew 9:13 (KJV)
But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Mark 2:16-17 (KJV)
And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? [17] When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

Luke 5:32 (KJV)
I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.

The Jews thought, and many still think, they were special godly people because they had the laws and did the rituals; thus missing the point. The point being the laws showed them they were sinners and needed a Savior. They still do today. They don’t need an earthly kingdom or a temple with more rituals---they need Jesus Christ. Belief in Jesus is the only way the ungodly, which includes all men, can be justified or have righteousness counted to them.

Romans 4:5 (KJV)
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

What faith is it that is counted for righteousness? It is pure and simple. It is faith that looks to Christ, to his righteousness. It is his righteousness, not our own, that saves.

When scripture says God imputes righteousness without works, it doesn’t mean we don’t work. We all work in one way or another. It doesn’t matter if our works are good or bad as far as salvation is concerned for our righteousness is as filthy rags. It is Christ’s righteousness that is accounted to us that saves. However, once saved, our heart is changed and our works become his works and thus we see good fruits. Still it is not these fruits or works that save us; but they happen because we are saved.

David understood that righteousness or the forgiveness of sins is from God, not from our works. Thus, showing once again that the grace of God was at work in the OT.

Romans 4:6 (KJV)
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

God’s forgiveness and mercy cover the sins of those who call upon him. OT grace.

Psalm 32:1-2 (KJV)
A Psalm of David, Maschil.
Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered. [2] Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Psalm 85:2-86:5 (KJV)
Thou hast forgiven the iniquity of thy people, thou hast covered all their sin. Selah. [3] Thou hast taken away all thy wrath: thou hast turned thyself from the fierceness of thine anger. [4] Turn us, O God of our salvation, and cause thine anger toward us to cease. [5] Wilt thou be angry with us for ever? wilt thou draw out thine anger to all generations? [6] Wilt thou not revive us again: that thy people may rejoice in thee? [7] Shew us thy mercy, O Lord, and grant us thy salvation. [8] I will hear what God the Lord will speak: for he will speak peace unto his people, and to his saints: but let them not turn again to folly. [9] Surely his salvation is nigh them that fear him; that glory may dwell in our land. [10 Mercy and truth are met together; righteousness and peace have kissed each other. [11] Truth shall spring out of the earth; and righteousness shall look down from heaven. [12] Yea, the Lord shall give that which is good; and our land shall yield her increase. [13] Righteousness shall go before him; and shall set us in the way of his steps.

[86:1] A Prayer of David.
Bow down thine ear, O Lord, hear me: for I am poor and needy. [2] Preserve my soul; for I am holy: O thou my God, save thy servant that trusteth in thee. [3] Be merciful unto me, O Lord: for I cry unto thee daily. [4] Rejoice the soul of thy servant: for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul. [5] For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

Righteousness was not accounted to Abraham after he was circumcised; but before he was circumcised showing that the work of circumcision had nothing to do with it; but it was imputed to him by God. This passage is a clear passage of the gospel. Those who believe have righteousness imputed to them regardless of physical circumcision. Salvation is the same for those in OT and NT, God grants forgiveness to those who believe God; because Christ’s blood was shed for their sins.

Romans 4:9-11 (KJV)
Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness. [10] How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision. [11] And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:

Romans 4:12-16 (KJV)
[12] And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised. [13] For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith. [14] For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect: [15] Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression. [16] Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

BTW, we must remember Abraham was not a Jew; but an uncircumcised gentile. . Abraham was from Ur of the Chaldees and the ninth generation from Shem, the son of Noah. Abraham’s father was Terah.

Christians are not called the seed of Jacob; but the seed of Abraham. Remember also that the Jewish race or Israelites hadn’t been established yet, until Jacob’s time.

Genesis 11:27-28 (KJV)
Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot. [28] And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

Since there were no Israelites until after the promise was made to Abraham, I got to wondering who the Hebrews were and when they came into existence. Abraham is the first person called a Hebrew. Gen. 14:13. His descendants through Isaac and Jacob were also know as Hebrews . Strong’s states Hebrew means an ancestor of Eber, the ancestor of Abraham. However, “The New Unger’s Bible Dictionary” states that Hebrew may mean, the one who crossed the river (Euphrates) or to cross over, or the one who crossed over. This leads me to believe he was called a Hebrew for he crossed over, not only from one land to another at God’s command, but crossed over to a new way of life and faith believing God.

The gospel is clearly given in the promise to Abraham’s seed through faith-----not law. Spiritual-----not physical. Circumcised in heart----not circumcised physically. Although those physically circumcised Jews claim Abraham as their father, scripture makes it plain his seed is through faith regardless of the physical state. One gospel promise for all peoples.

Romans4:13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.

Abraham received the promise of blessings on the nations over 400 years before the laws of Moses would be given. Thus, the promise is not under the law. The law was given to be a school master bringing us to Christ that we might be justified by faith.

Genesis 12:3 (KJV)
And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

Galatians 3:24 (KJV)
Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith.

If those of the law are the heirs, then faith is void and the promise is also void. The promise never hinged on law. Those who cling to law now or want to set up law again as in a future physical kingdom with the physical temple and rituals are not heirs. They seek to void faith and the promise.

Romans 4:14 (KJV)
For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:

The promise to all seed, both believing Jews (of the law) and believing Gentiles (of faith) is “of faith, that it might be by grace…” No faith, no grace, no promise!

Romans 4:16 (KJV)
Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,

John 1:17 (KJV)
For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.

“but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.”

Abraham’s example was written for us showing that if we believe the gospel righteousness shall also be accounted to us.

Romans 4:22-25 (KJV)
And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. [23] Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; [24] But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; [25] Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Once again scripture explain we are justified by faith, just as Abraham was justified by faith. Thus, we have peace with God (not wrath) through the one way, our Lord Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:1 (KJV)
Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

Mankind fell by one man, Adam a type of Christ, and mankind is redeemed by one man, Christ. Thus, all men are the same, sinful and in need of Christ. It doesn’t matter if they are Jews or Gentiles, born during OT or NT or present times. All are sinful and can only be righteous by Christ.

Romans 5:14 (KJV)
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come.

1 Cor. 15:45 (KJV)
And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit.

Romans 5:18-19 (KJV)
Therefore as by the offence of one judgment came upon all men to condemnation; even so by the righteousness of one the free gift came upon all men unto justification of life. [19] For as by one man's disobedience many were made sinners,/b] so by the obedience of one shall many be made righteous.

Interestingly men now have the physical death penalty regardless of their personal sins because of Adam. Like wise men receive the gift of grace by one man, Jesus Christ.

Romans 5:14-15 (KJV)
Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the similitude of Adam's transgression, who is the figure of him that was to come. [15] But not as the offence, so also is the free gift. For if through the offence of one many be dead, much more the grace of God, and the gift by grace, which is by one man, Jesus Christ, hath abounded unto many.

Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.
