They get it - we don't. "We" being the church. "They" being the world.
I am reminded today of how Jesus was quizzed about what a virtuous Jew would look like. Jesus seemed to reply that he knew of none and instead described a good Samaritan.
Check this link out from National Public Radio. Listen to the young man rave about his mentor who, by the way, unashamedly doesn't even believe in God.
Ladies and gentlemen, the kind of mentoring in this account is supposed to be what true eldership is all about. Instead we've created an "office of elder" which essentually exempts about 98% of Christian men from their God ordained shepherding role.
I thought the same thing the other day when listening to Colin Powell speak about "America's Promise". I pulled this from americaspromise.org:
"All children need support and guidance from caring adults in their families, at schools and in their communities. These include ongoing, secure relationships with parents as well as formal and informal relationships with teachers, mentors, coaches, youth volunteers and neighbors."
I had a similiar feeling that you described when I listened to the purpose of this program.
