It seems to me that many people believe that the prophet Elijah will return to give a warning message to God's people before the return of Christ. Personally, I believe we have misinterpretted the scriptures which have been used to support this doctrine. And, the deceiver of souls will use this to carry out his last day deceptions. Let me try to explain.
Here is a verse which seems to substantiate the false doctrine.
Malachi 4:5Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD:
Jesus said that Elijah had already come in his day. He said John the Baptist was Elijah. "And if ye will receive it, this is Elias, which was for to come." Matthew 11:14.
Why did Jesus say that John the Baptist was Elijah? Did he mean that Elijah had been reincarnated in the body of John? I don't think so. Rather, I think Jesus was saying that Malachi 4:5 meant that the Elijah message would come. John the Baptist gave the Elijah message, "Choose ye this day whom ye will serve." Elijah's actual words were, "How long halt ye between two opinions? if the LORD be God, follow him: but if Baal, then follow him."
But, in the last days a great deception will be pulled off. I suspect that Elijah, or rather a demon angel impersonating Elijah, will come to deceive many and will call down fire out of heaven just as Elijah did on Mount Carmel. The people will be called to worship the image to the beast when this fire comes down out of heaven. Notice what Revelation says about this event.
Revelation 13:14,15And he doeth great wonders, so that he maketh fire come down from heaven on the earth in the sight of men, And deceiveth them that dwell on the earth by the means of those miracles which he had power to do in the sight of the beast; saying to them that dwell on the earth, that they should make an image to the beast, which had the wound by a sword, and did live.
Now, if you are looking for Elijah to actual appear this would be a very great deception. But if you understand that it is the Elijah message then you will be safe. Will the Elijah message be given again? Yes, and again, and again, as it already has been given in our day and is being given.
Revelation 14:6,7And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, Saying with a loud voice, Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters.
Well, I hope this will encourage you to study this subject for yourself so that you will be girded with the truth. Those that love the truth will seek for it and will not be deceived.
