Many years ago when I first met the Lord, I wanted to find his church. Even though I wanted to go to learn more of him, somehow I thought I had to go to church, a left over from childhood Sunday school, I guess. So our family went church shopping. We visited many. I did get baptized at one. I learned many things in our visits, mostly how far the churches had gone from the scriptures. We just couldn't seem to find "the church". Seemed like Christ was no where near these places except for the occasion person. I prayed and prayed to be led to the church. We'd gotten so discouraged. I’d like to share what the Lord finally showed me.
One summer day, I was walking in a hayfield. I like to pray while I walk and I was asking, “Where is your church, God?” I looked around me and noticed all the green grass; but what stood out was the golden grass. Amidst the green field, there were very small patches of gold grass. Two or three here, five there, a dozen, maybe even 25 or 50. Mostly there were scattered patches with only two or three or five or six. The Lord impressed upon my mind that the field was the world. The green grass was the world and it's religions and the scattered small patches of gold grass was his church.
It seemed scattered and unorganized at first glance; but they were all gold. Or they were all united by Christ in them even though they appeared to the eye to be scattered and un-united. They were all of the same Master.
Later in winter, I noticed the field again. All the green grass had died, turned brown and fallen over. The gold grass was still standing tall reminding me that the church will stand on the day of the Lord and the tares will be stubble under our feet.
So I never again went church shopping. I began seeing his church in our travels as we'd run across another person, family, etc. who had Christ shining from their hearts. Eventually, he led me to the net to meet others scattered out there in the field and I see it is all just as he planned. One day he will sent the angels to gather his elect from the four corners of the world to be with him forever.
