David--
I think this is all a good case study in "taking every thought captive to
the obedience of Christ" (II Cor. 10:5).
How often the reality is instead that "the bankers" will gladly say 'Yes'
to many things--when the will of our all-wise God, as He has revealed it
to us in His word, says 'No' (see Rom. 13:8). Perhaps we might consider
further how very different our American churches and church organizations
would be if they restricted themselves to operating apart from the taking
on of debt (seemingly many, if not most, today would simply go out of
business).
Let us instead soberly consider the Great Commission needs which exist at
this late hour, in a world in which *half have yet to hear of the name of
Jesus* even for the very first time (all the while we build our
extravagant buildings--ironically, in which to worship the One who had
"no place to lay His head"). It is to these great needs that the bank
says no, and God says yes.
Grace in Christ,
Glenn
