They are fierce rivals on the tennis courts of the world. As of now, they are ranked at number 1 and number 2. Both have actually raised the level of play when compared the previous generation. One recently fell sick.... and the other sought him out at his bedside. We are reminded that the visitation of the sick is not the sole responsibility of "the clergy". Jesus was not speaking to "the clergy" when he declared: "I was sick and you did not visit me. Perhaps the long cold winters yield long practice sessions as they sit around the fire, waiting for spring. This is a recent concert photo of Rick Derringer, who passed into eternity a few days ago. If you will look at his strumming hand, at his fingertips is an unusual design. It's meant to honor our Lord, who truly is the first and last. And only, I might add. Do you see the Greek letters? Why would I post this photo? Because, I admire anyone who attempts to honor God in what they do... in the real world. Not just "in church". And I am reminded of God's intention for elders (Christian seniors) to lead the churches and to care for the younger ones in particular. A simple and natural arrangement. When Rick was 9 years old his caring father took him over to the Gibson guitar factory in Kalamazoo. Upon walking in, he was met with two guitars in a glass case... These super rare guitars were called the "Guitars of the Future". An Exporer model and a Flying V. As fate would have it, years later Rick would own one them himself. Purchased for $1500. Later sold for $15,000. Then sold to the next owner for $150,000.But that's not the point. The point is that every child is precious in God's sight and is a prodigy at something if given a chance and given the encouragement to succeed. Brother, uncle, father, neighbor, friend - are you thoughtfully engaged in this joyful mentoring task? Or will you leave it to others?Trust me, there are not enough interested "clergy" or "counsellors" or "therapists" to cover it. Furthermore, these are all paid agents - which greatly dilutes their best efforts.Even Jesus himself is not going to step in and do it. Instead he warns us that if we are stumbling blocks to the little ones who believe in Him, we would be better off dead. So, this is a big deal.To see Rick swapping licks with another Christian brother playing a saxophone, go here. At the 4 minute mark. These passageways go for miles and are filled with ancient art and inscriptions. This one is under the City of Rome. Almost forgotten for a thousand years. If you like hanging out with the dead, this is your kind of place.Enterprising souls soon found a lucrative market for the "bones of the martyrs". Proof that human nature has not changed. The subterranean inscriptions - do they teach us anything about church leadership? Yes, they do. He was a teacher and administrator at several Christian colleges in the South. On Sunday's he was a guest speaker at local churches of various denominations. He would often take his wife along to sing and his children to listen. The day was a change of scenery from the ordinary and a chance to meet some new people - always welcome and memorable, too.Without any discussion, after the meeting was over, someone would give Daddy a check or an envelope containing a check. He would quietly endorse it, fold it and leave it in the collection plate... An "open-mike" sort of meeting. Where ideas were tried and considered, questions posed and answered. The original painting, by German Heinrich Hofmann, went to auction less than a year ago. Very interesting.Oh my, think of the trust among neighbors and relatives wherein a child could be separated from parents for many hours and nobody seemed to be worried.Years later, Paul the apostles wrote: Two or three prophets should speak, and the others should weigh carefully what is said. 1 Corinthians 14:29. Prove all things, hold onto what is good! 1 Thessalonians 5:21

A Civics Lesson

https://housechurch.org/view-photo/a-civics-lesson

https://housechurch.org/view-photo/a-civics-lesson

These colorful welcoming signs are found in thousands of towns across our land. They remind us, however, that local civic organizations operate voluntarily. Whereas local churches do not. This is significant. Several thousand of churches will close this year due to the lack of money for staffing. Our Lord - did he not say that the children of darkness are sometimes wiser than the children of light? And no, that's not to suggest that the men and women involved in local service groups are somehow against Christ's Kingdom. We know better. I'm just borrowing a figure of speech. As I pray for new kinds of churches and new kinds of leaders.Down through the ages, echo the words of the Apostle: These hands provided for me, my necessities, and for them who were with me.
