How people fall for this, I have no idea.  However, I know of 4 or 5 families who have followed this man through 3 cross country moves in the last 5 years.  The "Pastor" goes and scouts a location where they can all live in the general area and then they move in mass.   They have left a wave of destruction and heartache everywhere they have gone.

You asked how people fall for this.  First of all, cult leaders practice deceit; a con game where the stakes are eternal.  It is bait and switch; the recruitee doesn't know what the real product is until it is too late.  

That is why it is so important to have our discernment eyes open.  How can you tell a wolf in sheeps' clothing?  Look for teethmarks.
