Another disadvantage of organizing according to the principles of this
world is that the organization becomes a target for lawsuits. Don't get
me wrong, those who molest children deserve to be punished.

Bankruptcy: Priest Sex-Abuse Settlements In Limbo
Ken Boddie,
PORTLAND -- (earlier today) The Portland archdiocese became the first in
the country to declare bankruptcy. So what happens now?
When the archdiocese declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, it put current
claims against the church on hold. But it could also affect sex-abuse
claims that have already been settled.
The church, under Archbishop John Vlazny (pictured), has already paid out
$53 million to settle 130 claims of priest sex abuse.

The claims paid out as a lump sum, as of 90 days ago, won't be touched.
But if those claims are paid by the archdiocese over an extended period
of time, those payments could fall under the control of the bankruptcy
court. And that means that payments to victims could be disputed or even
eventually reduced as competing claims on the church's assets are fought
for in bankruptcy court.
